How long does
PPF last?
Quality paint protection film typically lasts five to ten years. Where your film lands in that range depends on the product, how it was fitted and how it is looked after. Here is how to get the most from it.
The Short Answer
Typically five
to ten years.
That range is wide for a reason. A premium film that is fitted properly and washed with care will last a lot longer than a budget film on a car that is parked in the sun every day and run through brush car washes.
We fit ClearGuard PPF by Lamin8, a self-healing film that comes with a manufacturer warranty. Ask us for the warranty terms on your film when we quote, so you know exactly what is covered.
Lifespan Factors
What affects how long it lasts.
| Factor | What it means for your film |
|---|---|
| Film quality | Premium films resist yellowing, staining and cracking far better than cheap ones. |
| Installation | Clean edges and properly wrapped panels stop lifting, which is where most early failures start. |
| Sun exposure | A car parked outside every day takes more UV than one kept under cover. |
| How it is washed | Gentle hand washing helps the film last. Harsh brushes and strong chemicals wear it faster. |
| Driving conditions | Frequent highway driving means more impacts. The film is doing its job, but it works harder. |
Aftercare
Looking after your film.
Leave the car unwashed for the first few days after fitting. We will tell you exactly how long when you collect it.
Hand wash with a pH neutral shampoo and a soft mitt. Avoid brush car washes.
If you use a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at a distance and away from the film edges.
Clean off bird droppings, tree sap and bugs soon, before they bake on in the sun.
Park in the shade or under cover when you can.
A ceramic coating over the film makes it easier to keep clean and adds gloss.
When To Replace
Signs your film needs attention.
Film that is reaching the end of its life usually tells you. Look out for edges that are lifting, a yellow or cloudy tint, cracking, or stains that will not wash out.
If you notice any of these, send us a photo. Sometimes a single panel can be replaced. Old film can also be removed and new film fitted, and when it is done properly the paint underneath is protected throughout.

Answers
Lifespan questions.
How long does PPF last?
Quality paint protection film typically lasts five to ten years, depending on the product, how it was fitted, sun exposure and how it is cared for.
Does PPF turn yellow?
Older and cheaper films could yellow over time. Modern premium films are made to resist it. Sun exposure and care still play a part.
Can I take my car through a car wash with PPF?
Hand washing is best. Brush car washes can scratch the surface and catch the edges of the film.
Does removing PPF damage the paint?
Quality film removed properly should not damage factory paint in good condition. Paint that has been resprayed or is already failing is more of a risk, which we check first.
Is there a warranty on the film?
Yes. ClearGuard PPF by Lamin8 comes with a manufacturer warranty. Ask us for the terms on your film when we quote.
