PPF vs Ceramic
Coating.
They both protect your paint, but in very different ways. Here is a straight, honest breakdown of how paint protection film and ceramic coating compare, so you can pick what is right for your car and budget.
The Short Answer
Different jobs,
often a great team.
Here is the simplest way to think about it. Paint protection film is a thick, physical layer that takes real impacts, stone chips, scratches and scuffs, and even heals light marks itself. Ceramic coating is a thin, glassy chemical layer that adds serious gloss, makes the car easier to clean and helps fight UV, but it will not stop a stone chip.
So they are not really rivals. Many of our Durban clients put PPF on the high impact areas like the front of the car, then ceramic coat the whole vehicle on top for that deep shine and easy cleaning. You get the best of both.
Side by Side
How they compare.
| Paint Protection Film | Ceramic Coating | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | A thick physical shield against chips and scratches | A glossy layer for shine and easy cleaning |
| Stone chip protection | Yes, this is its main strength | No, it is too thin to stop chips |
| Self healing | Yes, light scratches heal with heat | No |
| Gloss boost | Adds gloss, especially with a gloss film | Adds deep, glassy gloss |
| Easier washing | Yes | Yes, very hydrophobic |
| UV protection | Yes | Yes |
| Typical lifespan | Around five to ten years | Several years with care |
| Best for | Chip prone areas, new and prized cars | Overall shine and low maintenance |
| Cost | Higher, it is a premium film, expertly fitted | More affordable than full PPF |
The Verdict
So which should you choose?
If your main worry is stone chips and scratches, paint protection film is the answer. If you mostly want a deep shine and a car that stays cleaner with less effort, ceramic coating is a brilliant, more affordable choice.
For the ultimate result, combine them. PPF on the high impact zones, ceramic on top of everything. Tell us your car and how you use it, and we will recommend the right mix.
Answers
Common questions.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes, and a lot of people do. You fit the film first, then ceramic coat over it for extra gloss and easier cleaning. It is a popular combination.
Is PPF or ceramic coating better for a new car?
It depends on your priority. For full protection of a new car, PPF on the front or whole car is ideal. For shine and easy upkeep, ceramic is great. Many new car owners do both.
Which lasts longer, PPF or ceramic?
Quality PPF usually lasts five to ten years. Ceramic coatings last several years with proper care. We will give you realistic expectations for your car.
Is ceramic coating cheaper than PPF?
Generally yes. Ceramic coating is more affordable than covering a car in film, which is why some owners start with ceramic and add PPF to key areas.
Do you offer both in Durban?
